Gárdonyi theatre brand identity

The Gárdonyi Theater aims to create an artistic community that extends beyond the walls of the building and preserves the city’s cultural heritage. Its renewed image reflects this spirit. The theater’s namesake, Géza Gárdonyi, wrote *The Stars of Eger* in Eger, and it was here that he also devised his secret code: a constantly evolving system of symbols that functions as a language of its own. The theater is much the same: a system of gestures, lights, sounds, and words that creates new meanings night after night.

In this cipher, the letter G corresponds to the symbol T; therefore, the two T’s hidden in the emblem evoke Géza Gárdonyi’s monogram and form a single letter G. The “T” both preserves the memory of the writer and alludes to the word “theater.” A prominent role in the visual identity is played by the typeface designed by Oszkár Sztanyó, a typographer with ties to Eger, which was created as his 2024 thesis project at Károly Eszterházy Catholic University.
