The aim of the Gárdonyi Theatre is to create an artistic community that extends beyond the walls of the building and preserves the town’s cultural heritage. Its revamped image brings this ethos to life. The theatre’s namesake, Géza Gárdonyi, wrote *The Stars of Eger* in Eger, and it was here that he also devised his secret code: a constantly evolving system of symbols that functions as a language in its own right. The theatre is much the same: a system of gestures, lights, sounds and words that creates new meanings night after night.
In this cipher, the letter ‘G’ corresponds to the symbol ‘T’; therefore, the two ‘T’s hidden within the emblem evoke Géza Gárdonyi’s monogram and form the letter ‘G’. The ‘T’ both preserves the memory of the writer and alludes to the word ‘theatre’. A key feature of the brand identity is the typeface designed by Oszkár Sztanyó, a typographer with links to Eger, which was created as part of his final-year project at the Károly Eszterházy Catholic University in 2024.
