To mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of János Arany, one of the greatest classicists of Hungarian literature, Petőfi Literary Museum has prepared a commemorative exhibition, with the aim of introducing the lesser-known faces of the poet to the public. The museum has published a series of books in 4 volumes, each of which deals with the exhibition in a different theme. The series includes a Study volume of writings on János Arany by contemporary authors, an Iconography volume of all the portraits of the poet made during his lifetime, a Catalogue of Objects on the legacy of the poet and his family, and the last is the official Catalogue of the exhibition.
The serial nature of the book covers is reinforced by a colourful fleck running across the spine. Printing techniques have also been exploited on two of the covers. On the cover of the Iconography, a montage of images from different periods of the poet’s life was printed in duotone, while the pixelated graphics on the cover of the Exhibition Catalogue was complemented by UV varnished pixels in addition to the disruption of the colourful fleck.
Our aim was to bring together the very different contents in a common layout, and so the first phase of the work resulted in a 9-division grid system that forms the basis of all the books. In addition, each of them has its own set of rules and use of images, adapted to the content.
